Memorial Day schedule of events

The Wilkin County VFW Post 2766 Military Unit will leave the Breckenridge VFW at 6:15 a.m. for services at Vukku Lutheran Cemetary, just south of Foxhome, Minnesota, at 6:40 a.m. The unit will then hold services at Stiklestad Cemetery, east of Doran, Minnesota, at 6:55 a.m., Campbell, Minnesota, Riverside Cemetery in Breckenridge at 7:15 a.m., Riverside Cemetery in Breckenridge at 7:45 a.m., St. Mary’s Cemetery at 8 a.m. and St. Joseph Cemetery in Brushvale, Minnesota, at 8:20 a.m. The Breckenridge VFW will be serving breakfast for the Wahpeton and Breckenridge military units at 8:30 a.m. at the Breckenridge Senior Citizen Center, at 225 5th St. South. Services continue at the Wilkin County Courthouse at 9:30 a.m. The North Dakota/Minnesota joint service is on the bridge at 10 a.m. Post 2766 will continue services at CHI St. Francis at 10:20 a.m. and the Wilkin County Veteran’s Park at 10:45 a.m., on the corner of Beede Avenue and Highway 75/Fifth Street.•The Wahpeton American Legion Hafner-Miller-Ross Post 20 and Woody Keeble VFW Post 4324 members will meet at the Wahpeton Vet’s Club between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m. Military services will begin at Riverside (Bohemian) Cemetery south of Wahpeton at 7:15 a.m., St. John’s (Tyler) at 7:30 a.m., Mooreton Cemetery at 7:45 a.m., Calvary Cemetery 8 a.m., and Fairview Cemetery at 8:15 a.m. Following the ceremonies a military unit breakfast will be held at the Breckenridge Senior Citizen’s Center at 8:30 a.m. Ceremonies will continue at Richland County Courthouse at 9:20 a.m., south side fire hall at 9:40 a.m., and 10 a.m., will feature a joint service at the Dakota/Minnesota Avenue Bridge with both Wahpeton and Breckenridge military units. •American Legion Auxiliary Unit 53 will be hosting a breakfast at the Breckenridge Senior Center May 29 from 8 a.m.-until gone.•The Wolverton American Legion Nelson-Ottesen Post No. 370 will hold a service at 11 a.m. at the Salem Cemetery in Wolverton on the north edge of town. Orvil Eugene Williams

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. Burial will follow at Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18 at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Disabled American Veterans and condolences may be left for the family at coburnfuneralhomes.comOrvil was born Aug. 12, 1945, to Charles E. and Mae Arlene (Gulling) Williams of Prairie City. When he was 12, the family relocated to Colfax, making it his home. In September of 1963, Orvil joined the U.S. Naval forces serving aboard the USS Cogswell as IC’man 2nd class during the Vietnam War. On the Jan. 15, 1966, he was joined in marriage with Cheryl Lynn Jones of Runnells. In 1972, they returned to Colfax, where they raised their three children, David (Michele) of Newton, Charles (Deborah) of Colfax and Alice (Kevin) Lincoln of Colfax.Orvil worked for the Bell Telephone Company for 30 years before retiring to focus on spoiling his grandchildren and wiener dogs. Orvil enjoyed building things and tinkering with engines. His family often claimed it had been “Orvilized” when he finished. He was a proud member of the American Legion, DAV, NRA, Telephone Pioneers and the Cogswell Association.He is survived by his wife; children; 11 grandchildren, Charles (Hawk), Jackie (Tom), Brielle (Tyler), Seth, Christian, Kaleb, Lynn, Caleb and Isabella; two step-grandchildren, Samantha (Aaron) and Bailey; three great-grandchildren; and brother, Marty. He preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and Edward; and a sister, Wanita. (Newton Daily News)
